Dispatches: Sunset at Bungas Beach, West Sumatra

19 02 2013

photo-copy-768x1024As implied in their title, our Global Correspondents are a worldly lot. They send us tips, updates, photos and videos from their travels. Here’s the latest from one of our WomenAboutWorld, Louise Rafkin.

Sunset at Bungus Beach, West Sumatra.  The views are rivaled by the food: spicy, small plates of fish and meat cooked in coconut and spiced to perfection. And not another tourist in sight.

Japan: Lady Gaga Says Go!

When the reigning queen of pop says jump, we say, “how high?”

While in Japan for a tour, Lady Gaga said, ”I would like to use my position here today and all week long to run around Tokyo and enjoy the beautiful city, and kiss all the beautiful little monsters and scream at the top of my lungs that everyone should visit this beautiful place.” (From http://news.travel.aol.com)

We are all familiar with the devastation that occurred in Japan this past March. However, not everyone realizes that only a very small percentage of the country was directly affected. For the rest of the country, it is business as usual and everyone from pop superstar Lady Gaga to senior tourism officials are proclaiming as such.

Magnet Tours, the first and only tour operator in Japan focused on the LGBT market believes that gay and lesbian travelers can play a significant role in Japan’s post-disaster recovery. They are sharing this message alongside recent announcements from Japanese tourism officials and Lady Gaga’s current stay in Japan, where she will be performing tonight (Saturday, June 25, 2011) for the MTV Video Music Aid Japan.

Tour of the Week: China with Venture Out

3 06 2011

Cormorant Some of you might have visited China’s classic destinations in the 1980s when the sheer majesty and newness (to foreigners) of this once-isolated giant were enthralling. T

hat newness just keeps on getting newer: China is perhaps the fastest-changing country in the world.

Even if you went when it first opened up to tourism, chances are a return visit here will be just as eye-popping. LGBT tour operator Venture Out’s Journey through China — which uses upscale accommodations throughout the program — begins with sojourns to the signature monuments of Beijing…

The awesome Great Wall, the history-saturated Forbidden City, and the stunning catapulting modern city itself. You head then to the traditional starting point of the Silk Road, Xi’an, where you’ll dally with the haunting Terracotta Warriors.  Then fly south to Guangxi Province for a lovely float on the Li River, meandering beneath the region’s delicately monumental karsts, some of the most astonishing scenery  on earth. Then it’s up to Longji for hikes among  the stunning Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces, an extraordinary example of extreme rice terracing and very visually captivating. You have the option to finish up with a few days’ extension in the  beehive megalopolis of Shanghai before returning home or wherever your travels take you.

  • Journey Through China
  • October 12-21, 2011 (main tour)

China took center stage during the Summer 2008 Olympics. And now it’s time for its encore, starring you and your Hermes small group. What’s on the playbill? How about an ancient wall 4,000 miles long? A city once forbidden to visitors? Or how about 8,000 stone warriors watching over an emperor and serene gardens whose tenders seek nothing less than metaphysical perfection.  The tour takes place April 9 – 18, 2011 and costs $2695 USD per person.

Kristina, our friend at Hermes Tours has a deal for you: “I can also offer a special discount for your readers. Save $100 off the price of the main tour or $150 off the main + Hong Kong extension. Offer valid until Jan 28, 2011.  Use code: OTCHJA28.”
