Photo Du Jour: An Eye On Carnival Puerto Vallarta

12 04 2013

ArcencielstudiVallarta-48[1] PV

This photo comes to us courtesy of Puerto Vallarta Carnival, which took place earlier this year, but we loved the colors and the sexy look of this disguised stranger.

It’s not a gay event per se but with all those feathered, bejeweled and made-up guys, there’s certainly something at least a bit queer about it.

Speaking of PV, we recently covered their upcoming Pride. Click here for more information.

It was taken at Hearson’s Cove in the Pilbara, only 20 min drive from Karratha. (Don’t worry, we had to look it up too! Pilbara is in Western Australia. Click here to learn more.)

ManAboutWorld Correspondent Report: Balloons Over Cappadocia, Turkey

Taken at 6:30am flying in a hot air balloon over Goreme, Turkey, in the heart of Cappadocia.

ManAboutWorld Correspondent David Alport recently traveled to Turkey with his partner. He snapped this photo while flying in a hot air balloon over Goreme. It was too late to include in our architecture-themed Parting Shots section in the April issue of ManAboutWorld but we loved it so much we wanted to share with you here. (To see the April issue, click here.)

If you can handle the splurge (about $200 per person), a sunrise hot air balloon ride is not only the best way to get a bird’s eye view of one of earth’s most magical and beguiling landscapes … it’s also a singular and magical experience that every traveler should experience once in a lifetime. Cappadocia is the perfect place.

Around The World With Paul and Jose: Packing For 87 Days

4 04 2013

ManAboutWorld Global Correspondent Paul Teixeira
is preparing for a fabulous global adventure. He agreed to document his trip here with highlights from many destinations around the world. In his own words:

The time has come and we are all packed for our 87 day journey. You are probably wondering how one packs for something like this and we think the answer is simple; We are traveling light and with 24 flight segments, we don’t want to mess with checking luggage.

So we have 1 international carry-on each and a travel back pack. Of course we opted for style (and function) each getting a Tumi Alpha Bravo Knox Backpack and a Victorinox Spectra carbon fiber carry-on. We’ve condensed down to the TSA approved liquids and grooming gear, an assortment of all the meds we may need, and since we have accommodations with laundry facilities, carefully selected clothing for a week (An ultralight down hoody, 6 T-shirts, 2 polos, 1 tank-top, 1 button down, 2 shorts, 3 jeans, 1 slacks, 1 workout attire, 10 socks/undies, 1 belt, 1 sneakers, 1 semi-formal shoes, 1 board-shorts, and of course 1 speedo).  Bon voyage!

Follow their travels here and on their blog, http://rtw87.blogspot.com/.

Parting Shots: Behind the Scenes in Mexico

4 04 2013

mexicoThe last section of our magazine is “Parting Shots,” which are photos taken by our Global Correspondents, subscribers and other friends who send us their favorite image relating to that month’s theme. Our April theme was architecture. Here’s the story behind one of our favorite pictures of the Museo Soumaya in Mexico from Global Correspondent Paul VanDeCarr.

The museum opened in March 2011, and I visited and took this photo in June 2011. On the inside are enormous white galleries divided up by movable walls, and some excellent pieces (and some not-so-excellent). But it’s the exterior that I really like. It’s got a honeycombed pattern of reflective glass on the outside, so fluid and organic-looking that I want to lick it or eat it. It was designed by Mexican architect Fernando Romero, and funded by another Mexican and the world’s richest man, Carlos Slim Helú — the museum is named after the latter’s late wife.

Round The World With Paul and Jose: Prepare For Take Off

30 03 2013
Plan much?

Plan much?

We have 6 weeks in Europe included in our 87 day RTW trip, and here’s how we planned them.

We started listing some 18 cities and realized it was too dense. We’ve hardly been anywhere in Europe prior, and we know we will return, so we focused on more time per city. Our entry point coming from Bangkok is Vienna on May 16th, and we need to get to Stockholm on June 19th. See my previous post for how this fits into the world journey. We have 1st class rail passes so we can enjoy the European landscape, but longer hops we are doing with flights. We also are centering weekends on the cities we feel may have bigger gay party scenes.
