An Must-visit Gay-owned Restaurant in Phuket, Thailand

7 09 2017
Restaurant Royale Nam Tok in Phuket, ThailandGay Phuket update: Restaurant Royale Nam Tok in Phuket, Thailand is a class act from start to finish. The sumptuous dining space, superb service by host Corry and the culinary distinction of Chef Marc are usually hallmarks of the finest European Michelin Star restaurants. Their exquisite home by day and restaurant by night, with only six tables, lavishly set with fine French napery, antique silver cutlery and elaborate glassware, could only be described as distinguished opulence.

On arrival we enjoyed the sultry sounds of famous French divas while sipping pre-dinner champagne cocktails in the tropical pool garden before being served an amuse bouche of mushroom cappuccino.

The menu varies throughout the year. An appetiser of large plump scallops fried in ginger and served in a rich pumpkin soup was delectable. The house speciality, Champignons á la Madeleine, features mushrooms stuffed with a secret recipe belonging to Marc’s aunt and they are seriously delicious.

Grandmother’s Pot-au-Feu (rabbit stew) in a white wine sauce with two mustards and tarragon was a wild French treat and the sauce was so good you could have bathed in it. Canadian Lobster and fried turbot filet in lobster bouillon sauce, with coconut milk from Marc’s own garden, was also sensational.

What a dilemma, everything sounded so enticing. Marc suggested the surprise dessert medley to share. How could we go wrong with a master chef in the kitchen? Luscious petit fours served on top of an ornate glass bowl containing Siamese Fighting Fish was a touch of finesse to complete a perfect dinner.

It is owned by two lovely Belgian men who packed up their European restaurant and transported it to their new home in Thailand.

DDTI: The View From Up Here, The Sofitel So Bangkok

1 05 2015

ManAboutWorld Global Correspondent Michael Siebert visited Bangkok and stayed at ManAboutWorld Editor’s Choice award winner the Sofitel So Bangkok. Here’s his report, just in; and above a self portrait he took (using a timer) of him and a friend.

Sofitel So Bangkok is a fantastic, well-located hotel combining together elegant French luxury and warm Thai hospitality and styled by Monsieur Christian Lacroix.
The pool is spectacular along with the view.  If you are a chocolate lover, be sure to visit the “chocolate lab” at ground level, as well as the rooftop bar, Park Society.  An excellent time to visit is during the Thai new year in April each year; lastly, don’t miss out of the water fight in the Silom area during the new year.

#TBT: Bangkok, 1967

7 08 2014

bangkok1967If you can believe it, this is Bangkok. No flashing lights. No endless skyline. No chaos and congested traffic. This photo of Bangkok was taken in 1967, just shy of 50 years ago. In the background, you see The Democracy Monument, built in 1939 at a major traffic circle in Bangkok. There’s quite a bit more traffic these days, to say the least. (And we love the three-wheel samlor that no longer exist on the streets!)

The photo is makes us nostalgic for Bangkok, where our editor-in-chief Ed Salvato recently visited, and where we’ve always had a special relationship. It is a city that’s become one of the largest and most populated in the world. Its meteoric rise to the top of desired travel destinations is one of many reasons why we dedicated our summer issue to the great Southeast Asian country.

In our issue, we cover Bangkok along with Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Click here to subscribe for our latest issue, on digital newsstands now!
