Fort Lauderdale may just be the best gay American city we’ve got, where gays have been welcomed for decades to live, explore, and enjoy a taste of the good life. It’s 38 square miles of sprawling, sun-soaked metropolis and miles of white sand beach, and in the center of it all, one of the great gayborhoods in the world — Wilton Manors.

Our free guide to Fort Lauderdale delves deep into the city, highlighting the best of its restaurants, nightlife, shopping, culture, and gay guesthouses. In the years before the Stonewall riots, when ideas like gay marriage were still far-fetched pipe dreams, these guesthouses were sanctuary’s, a place where gay men could be themselves, free to flirt and frolic (among other F-words) without fear of prejudice.

The free guide puts the spotlight on gay locals who reveal their favorite hotspots and hidden gems, and we even dish out a few fabulous day-trip ideas, for those mornings when you want to get out of town for the chic fast-paced buzz of Miami, or the laid-back opulence of Palm Beach.

Download the ManAboutWorld on the iTunes App Store or Google Play for tablet or smart phone and get the guide for free. For a free three-month subscription to the magazine, click here.

Our Gay Agenda: This Museum Is So Gay

10 02 2014

PhillyThatsSoGayPhiladelphia’s Library Company  opens a gay history exhibit today: That’s So Gay: Outing Early America, that looks at the questions of how we can know whether a person who lived in the past would be called lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender today.

While there’s no way to definitively answer these questions, the exhibit looks at the evidence of individuals who took part in same-sex relationships, wrote poems and novels celebrating such relationships, deviated from gender norms, and suffered for transgressive behavior in ways that are well-documented in the historical record. No surprise it’s happening in Philadelphia, the city that tapped Miss Richfield to demonstrate its dual appeal of history and gay nightlife.

The exhibit is open weekdays through October 17th, but ManAboutWorld suggests visiting in early March, so you can also attend the LGBT party at the Philadelphia Flower Show on March 2.  For more information on where to stay, eat and play in Philadelphia, check out the most recent coverage in this month’s ManAboutWorld Magazine.

If you’re visiting it may be tempting to hop back on a train to New York, Baltimore or DC if you’re from one of these nearby metropolises but the city really is more fun when you stay over. The thoughtful team at VisitPhilly  has made it easier with the enticing VisitPhilly Overnight Hotel package, including (among other events and benefits) the incredibly fun PHS. Philadelphia Flower Show.

Hot Guys In New Ft. Lauderdale Commercial

26 10 2012

Suddenly feel the urge to go surfing?

This is groundbreaking but it’s also just plain hot. Check it out here.

With this TV ad, Ft. Lauderdale becomes among the first mainstream tourism board to integrate gay messaging in an otherwise mainstream promotion.

DiscoverAmerica released this ad earlier this year that featured two gay men on a cable car.

But this is a great trend that we strongly encourage. It’s more and more about “traveling while gay” versus “gay travel.”

According to the organizers:

BeachBear Weekend has been created to showcase the healthy outdoor lifestyle enjoyed in Greater Fort Lauderdale. The events over the course of the week will focus on the beach, surf, exercise, and of course some of the hottest parties anywhere. Proceeds from this event will benefit Sunserve… whose mission is to provide critical life assistance and professional mental health services with an emphasis on the economically disadvantaged, marginalized youths, and senior adults in Greater Fort Lauderdale.
